I am perpetually fantasizing about either buying a Van's Aircraft RV or building one myself. The author suggests a variety of reasons to consider homebuilts, but near the top of my list is the incredible performance per dollar available in a homebuilt. You can find a nice RV-8 in the $100k range. Find me a certified two seat, aerobatic, IFR capable aircraft with a 700 pound useful load that cruises at 180KTAS and can be had used for $100k. It doesn't exist. But know what you're getting yourself into. Homebuilts come with ALL levels of build quality, paperwork, and handling characteristics.
